NEW Adam Sandler movie!

Photobucket

I cannot wait to see this. Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Jonah Hill, AND Jason Schwartzman. I have no doubt in my mind that it'll be hilarious.

I watched this for the first time in my life. Great movie. I suppose with me being half African American, it's difficult for me to watch films about times when blacks were oppressed. Especially films made by white men. It has always seemed like a mockery of a sort. I now know never to doubt Steven Spielberg.

Cadillac Records
is a true story about the rise of Chess Records in the 1950s and its recording artists to include: Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Etta James, and Chuck Berry.

Etta James is played by the singer, Beyoncé Knowles. This is one of the first roles I have ever respected the singer as an actress.
Photobucket

The movie has and incredible cast, including Adrian Brody.

It's a must-see.

Here is my favorite performance:

"You owe ME a 10 second car."

Photobucket

Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster, and Michelle Rodriguez are all back to the big screens with Fast and Furious. There is nothing too remarkable about these series of movies, but they are fun to watch. There is something so thrilling about watching unrealistic car chases and cop busts. I went into the theater thinking I might be slightly let down, but left pretty satisfied. I was definitely at the edge of my seat the entire time.

"You want to make God laugh? Tell him your plans."

Photobucket

Bella
is a true love story that illustrates how one moment can change your life forever. There's no way to give a synopsis without giving everything away, so just watch it. It's a beautiful and heartbreaking film. It will literally move you.

I heard the makers of Donnie Darko are coming out with a sister film. I'm not too sure how true that is, but I'm excited.

Photobucket

If you haven't seen the original, you should rent it right this second.

I'm not even going to try to explain what the movie is about. You just have to watch it for yourself.

Photobucket

This is a video of the song "Mad World" by Gary Jules. It is seriously chilling.

"Without hope, life's not worth living."

Milk
is the incredible story of Harvey Milk, an American gay activist and California's first gay elected official.

Gus Van Sant scored a victory with this remarkable film, and Sean Penn won an Oscar for his role.

Photobucket

Whether you're gay or not, support gay rights or not, or have never given much of a thought to the struggle that gays are facing even today....I suggest you watch this movie. It may just change your views.

Photobucket

I left the theater in tears, and as I watched it again on DVD there were even more. Anyone with a heart will take something away from this film.

All you need is love.

Across the Universe is a a musical with some substance.

Photobucket

Set in New York City during the Vietnam War, the film is extremely powerful to watch. Every scene has a Beatles song to go along with it. Every song fits perfectly to what is happening in front of you. It's perfect.

Photobucket

This is one of the most powerful scenes from the movie, with "Strawberry Fields Forever" sung by the main character, Jude.

Salma Hayek even makes a surprise appearance. Who wouldn't enjoy that?

Photobucket

This is a movie everyone should have in their collection.

A 90s Classic

This movie will always be incredible.

Enough said.

Are you game or not?

Photobucket

Love Me If You Dare is another favorite film of mine. Copies of this movie are now almost impossible to find. Luckily, I have a friend who works at a movie store in New York and found me this movie. I'm sure there are ways to download the film over the internet, so i recommend you do so.

Photobucket

The film is a love story about two selfish individuals who are obsessed with a game somewhat like Truth or Dare since they were just kids. They dare each other to do outrageous things to embarrass and destroy each other. The whole movie is in French, so there are subtitles. It's an extremely fast pace movie, so it's very exhilarating to keep up with. The cinematography is also to die for.

Ben Affleck can act?!

Photobucket

Photobucket

If you've never seen the movie Chasing Amy, I would suggest that you do if you want a good laugh. I had never seen it, but was told to immediately. I have never been a fan of the Clerks movies, but this movie, also directed by Kevin Smith, has a little more depth. Ben Affleck's character tries to make a lesbian fall in love with him the entire movie. It is sad, yet humorous. I have never seen Ben Affleck give a more powerful performance, especially in a comedy. I loved this movie.

The Wackness

Photobucket

The Wackness
is a movie I had heard about through word of mouth, but had no idea what I would be getting myself into by watching it. All I had heard was that it was a powerful movie that needed to get more recognition. Since I'm always up for watching unheard of movies, I sat down and watched this great movie last night.

Set in New York in the 90s, I fell in love within the first ten minutes. The movie is about a loner who sells drugs to get by and to help his parents with money. He develops a profound friendship with his therapist and father of his love interest.

Big thumbs up!

"Hello, stranger."

Closer is my favorite movie ever made. It even beats out Eternal Sunshine in my book.

Photobucket

Photobucket

The cast alone is astounding. Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Clive Owen, and Julia Roberts. Need I say more?

The movie is a twisted story of four strangers who somehow become entangled in each other's lives through lies, deceit, infidelity, and ultimately, love.

The emotion of these characters is so captivating that I still get chills every time I watch it. And I'm not ashamed to admit that I've seen this movie countless times. Seriously, countless.

I suggest this movie to every person I've ever met. Not only is the writing genius, but it's one of rare films that challenges your convictions.

Seeing this movie for the first time is thrilling and a bit shocking. Seeing it again will just make you admire and love it.

Truly, there are no words to do this movie justice. JUST WATCH IT.

My favorite scene:

Perfection.

Slumdog Millionaire KILLED at the Oscars!

It won EIGHT out of ten Academy Awards. That is amazing.

"Even artichokes have hearts."

Amélie is one of my favorite foreign films. It is a movie I watch to get myself out of any bad mood. The main character, Amélie, just has a certain charm about her.

Photobucket

Somehow, she consumes you.

Amélie is always inside of her own head, and the movies takes you through her imagination and thoughts. She has a way of showing you that the simple things in life can sometimes be magical, like skipping stones or helping out a stranger. She takes you on an adventure of playing silly games with a man she would fall in love with. All this in the setting of Paris, France. It is a beautiful film that I know I could never forget even if I wanted to.

Wristcutters: A Love Story

Today I watched Wristcutters with Shannyn Sossamon and Patrick Fugit. I loved it. There's nothing too particular and life-shattering about this movie, but it was fun to watch.

I would say this is a "feel good" movie.

Photobucket

Boy gets his heartbroken. Boy slits his wrists and goes to an afterlife for suicides. Boy falls in love with girl he meets in the afterlife. Dark, but somehow very humorous. And best of all, a great love story.

12 more days until OSCARS!

Monday, February 9, 2009

"You're just some guy who made me laugh at a party once."

WOW. That was my reaction to Revolutionary Road.

I knew I had to see Kate Winslet, obviously one of my favorite actresses, and Leonardo DiCaprio together again in theaters. Another movie I was willing to pay the ridiculous price for a movie ticket these days. I just couldn't miss this.

Now, I'm not one of those delusional Titanic fans hoping that this movie would be a delightful remake of a cheesy love story that's loosely based on a tragic truth. If you can't tell, I was never big on Titanic.

As I watched the previews of their new movie, I knew that this one would be different. This would be something I would actually enjoy.

Though sometimes previews can be misleading, I had a strong feeling Revolutionary Road would be feel real. And it did.

This movie is as raw as it is honest.

Revolutionary Road is a story of a young suburban couple in the 1950s finding out what their dreams are, and realizing those dreams could be very unattainable. The entire time, i sat in my chair mesmerized by these characters.

I would give more of a synopsis, but it's something you just have to see for yourself.

And I'll leave you with the official trailer:

I wasn't kidding.

When i said i could watch Eternal Sunshine every day... I was serious.
I started my day with a little Jim and Kate :)

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

"You know me, I'm implusive."

Today i re-watched one of my all-time favorite movies, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

This film is one i can watch every day of my life, if i actually had the time. Not only is it beautifully made, but the writing is pure genius.

The cast includes Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst, and more. It's no wonder that it blows me away each time.

After an impulsive decision to erase him from her memory, Clementine (Winslet) provokes her boyfriend Joel (Carrey) to return the favor. The whole movie is one twisted suspense that only makes sense until the end. Michel Gondry, the director, takes you into the mind and field of Joel's memories only to prove that one's memories are actually sacred.

It is a romantic comedy like no other. Although, the humor in it may be a little dry for some tastes. This is Jim Carrey's most dramatic serious role, and one should not expect his acting to reflect anything remotely close to his other work. Carrey is still brilliantly funny, but on a whole different level.

I guess it amazes me that this movie still gives me butterflies, as much as i watch it.

This is my all time favorite scene. That goes for any movie I've seen.

"Watching 'Eternal Sunshine,' you don't just watch a love story- you fall in love with what love really is. A journey into the beauty of connection." -Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

"This is our destiny."

If you haven't gone to see Slumdog Millionaire yet, I suggest you do before it goes out of theaters. It's one of the movies that is most compelling on the big screen.

This movie is easily one of the best I've seen all year. It has already received rave reviews and is expected to be the highlight of the Oscar's this year.

Slumdog is a story based on the novel Q&A by Indian author Vikas Swarup. The film begins with the main character Jamal being accused of cheating his way to winning India's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The story unfolds as director Danny Boyle takes you on a journey into the life and experiences of this main character and how he came to be on the show. A uncanny love story is woven into the plot and seems to give the entire movie purpose.

I feel as though any synopsis written by me or by anyone for that matter could never do this film justice. It is just that magical.

i'm literally in love with this movie.

Introduction

When i started thinking about possible topics for a blog, i thought.. "What interests me above anything else in life?" The answer came to me faster than you could probably fathom. MOVIES! I love them. I live for them. In a sense, they are my own little escape from reality. I can watch some of my favorite movies over and over again, because they have this ability to put me in another place and another time for a mere 1.5 hours or so. Many of my favorite films are actually independently made, and/or are by no means box office hits. For me, these are often the most captivating pieces to watch. Though every once in awhile, Hollywood surprises me with a rare and beautiful film that actually makes me remember why I first fell in love with movies in the first place.

Essentially, this blog is to express my thoughts and opinions on movies of the past and of the present. I have no intention of "bashing" movies in any way. I'm not a professional movie critic, and I have no desire to be. Hopefully, this blog will give some prospect for others who happen to come across my page, because there are truly so many magnificent films out there that do not receive as much credit as they deserve.

I suppose my goal is to get others to see how a film can impact one's life, make one question one's beliefs, and actually alter patterns of thinking. Or simply make a person laugh to tears. I sincerely hope, even if it's just a single person, falls as head over heels as i have.

Here are some of my favorite movie stills:
